Cú Chulainn was under a geis to never eat any meat from a dog. This I believe was how Morrígan was able to secure his death. And that was a very good very informitive piece Lela, thank you for posting it! Oh, I see. Thanks for the clarification of the dog meat, and another Thanks for the compliment. It was fun to put together.

And that was a very good very informitive piece Lela, thank you for posting it! Oh, I see. Thanks for the clarification of the dog meat, and another Thanks for the compliment. It was fun to put together. A Geis or "Gessa" (Plural) could take two forms in Celtic culture. The first kind like the dog meat Cú Chulainn (The Hound of Ulster) was to never eat was given early in life, that if he should go against the Geis his death would undoubtedly follow. There was a geis on Fergus Mac Róich that he never turn down a feast, and there was a geis on all people that they should never turn a left side to a chariot of Emain Macha. The texts are clear in that the geis has a very magical quality, and wasn't simply a "taboo" as many like to tell us. It was set in place around the time of birth, or very early in life by a Druid or Poet, and this Geis would ultimately decide the destiny of the spirit. Now the second kind of Geis, was more like a promise or oath of loyalty, these types of Geis didn't necessarily lead to a death but more over reflected on one's honor, so to the Celts the breaking of such a Geis would be a fate worse than death.
