The good news is that Sun Sign comparisons speak best to the potential longevity and durability of a relationship between two people. Two people with "traditionally" compatible Sun Signs are moving "heart to heart" through life in the same or a similar direction.
The surprising news (to many of you) is that Sun Sign comparisons don't speak much about attraction, falling in love, or why two people get together in first place. (In Part 4 of Romancing the Zodiac, I'll be discussing Attraction and Soul mates.)
Mapping Out Paths of Least and Most Resistance
Sun Sign comparisons can map out the "paths of least resistance" and the "paths of most resistance." Sun Sign comparisons can assist us in sorting out those people with whom we generally tend get along with the easiest in long term relationships… and, on the other hand, Sun Sign comparisons can assist in sorting out those people with whom (over the long haul) we will generally tend to experience the most "challenges" with.
Disclaimer: Sun Signs neither make or break a relationship. Any two people who love one another and are committed to a relationship can make it work.
Further "traditionally easy" Sun Signs match ups are based on the supposition that everyone wants and prefers smooth and easy.
Practical experience shows this supposition is not always reliable. Some people prefer, need, and/or choose to have more "friction" in their long term relationships. Some people actually prefer, need, and/or choose the "paths of most resistance."
It’s Elementary
Each of the 12 Zodiac Signs is in an element. There are four elements: Fire, Earth, Air, Water. In Sun Sign comparisons, the general rule of thumb (with possible exceptions) is that you tend to get along best with those people whose Sun Signs are in the same element or in a "complementary" element. Fire and Air are considered to be complementary elements, and Earth and Water are considered to be complementary elements.
Easy Connections
Signs in the same element are considered to be "trine." If you play "connect the dots" on an astrology chart, "trine" Signs form an equilateral triangle. The exception to this is that people with their Suns in the same Sign (same element) are considered to be in Sign Conjunction.
Signs in a complementary element are considered to be "sextile." If you play "connect the dots" on an astrology chart, "sextile" Signs (together with the "trine" Signs) form a six sided star. The exception to this is that people with their Suns in the opposite Sign (complementary elements) are considered to be in Sign Opposition.
Fire and Air
To better understand how this works, we'll start with the complementary elements of Fire and Air.
Following this rule of thumb – the Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius) and the Air Signs (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius) all tend to get along the easiest.
But remember the two exceptions (conjunctions and oppositions)? Astrologers have widely varying opinions regarding the effects of Sun Sign conjunctions and Sun Sign oppositions.
Fire and Air oppositions:
* Aries (fire) – Libra (air)
* Leo (fire) – Aquarius (air)
* Sagittarius (fire) – Gemini (air)
Experience shows that two people with their Sun Signs in the same (conjunction) or in opposite Signs (opposition) get along with one another in either an extremely positive manner or in an extremely negative manner. The key focus here is on extremes. There's generally no emotional middle ground in either a same Sun Sign relationship or in an oppositional Sun Sign relationship.
