The stories of the Faery folk are as old probably as the hills themselves, and are as many as the drops of water in the sea. In most of your more modern tales the faeries are small, "pixie" type "Tinkerbelle" type beings with magickal power fed by the very elements of nature. They are seen as sweet, lovable, mischievous beings, though the truth of the matter can sometimes be very different. So who are the beings with which Faery Wicca, and the traditional old style Faery witch base their studies and practices? They are the ever-living "Sidhe" or people of the mounds. While they do love a good time and make music, and enjoy a good feast (Just as the ancestors themselves did). They Faery folk, are the descendants of the Tuatha Dé Danann (People, clan, or tribe of the Goddess Danann, Danu, Dana, or Anu), The darker Fomorii, and the Fir bolg, who in all probability are some of the first inhabitants of Ireland who *may* have been responsible for the megaliths, and earthen mounds we see today, and are such a HUGE part of the culture after the coming of the Sons of Mil (The Celtic peoples of Spain).
In Faery Wicca as well as in *most* traditional Irish belief Anu is GOD. She is the mother of all things, as Anu is an embodiment of the land it's self. Her children are sometimes referred to as the "Children of the land". They mingled with people, though are obviously from the texts separated from them by their superiority. As the "ever-hidden ones" they embody the positive aspects of the self. They live within the land sea and sky and are a part of the magic within each of us. There are certainly more elemental spirits within each of these realms as well, which we'll get into as the discussion progresses.
The Fomorii, are more untamed, chaotic spirits who empower the elements of being, creation, and destruction, where as the Tuatha Dé could be seen as empowering such things through law, skill and order.
On the subject of elementals as used in Traditional Faery Wicca I've heard where some consider them to be the Tuatha Dé dwindled over time. Like a long family tree I suppose. That list as I understand it goes like this:
Beginning of course with the Tuatha Dé Danann we split into:
Daoine Sidhe and Fenian Heroes
the to:
Heroic and medieval faery
to the:
Deminitive, Elizabethan, and Jacobean Fairies.
to the:
Flower, and folk tale faeries
then to the Elemental Faeries.
