THE ELEMENT EARTH
The Element Earth is the source and provider of all our needs. It is the element of solidity, strength, making things permanent, and some regenerative capabilities. Earth is thought to be the combination of Fire, Air, and Water and is the Universal force of solidification present in physical manifestation.
This is the element we are closest to home with since it IS our home. Earth can literally represent a handful of soil or the entire planet. However, it doesn’t just represent the physical, but that part of it which is stable, solid, and dependable.
Earth is the foundation of the elements, the base. It is the realm where most of us live the largest part of our lives. When we walk, sit, stand, crawl, talk, eat, sleep, work our jobs, tend our plants, care for our homes and our pets, play, and so on we are working within the Element of Earth.
Earth is the sphere of abundance, prosperity, and wealth. While it is the most physical of the elements this is not a negative, for it is upon Earth the other three rest. Without Earth, life as we know it could not exist. It represents sensations, patience, stability, health, warmth and comfort, animals, and animal instincts; it is nurturing, moist, and fruitful. It is nature, the storehouse of everything physically essential to life. It is our “Mother”, our home, our all. It always has been. And until recently, no living things – save birds – left its surface. Without it we would perish. A high Earth person seems a practical sort and “quite down to earth”, a hard worker, stable, and a good provider, though can be a little stubborn at times. A low Earth person can seem confused, insecure and alone, unable to feel wanted, and any work may be affected.
In magickal workings Earth rules anything involving business, money, employment, prosperity in all its forms, stability, fertility, and so on. It can involve the use of herbs and plants. Using the correct herb along with other tools to attain your desire can be very effective. In a way, in Earth operations lie the roots of all magick, for even those operations not of this element are performed upon the Earth and grounded into the Earth. Symbolically green or brown gemstones/crystals represent earth as do any pictorials of earth.
In summary, Earth is our foundation – solid, stable, and fertile. It is the element of birth, it is where original ideas, wants, and desires crystallize and where they come full circle to manifest in material form, building a solid foundation for the next desire.

THE EARTH ELEMENTALS
While there are many types of Earth Elementals, Gnomes are the chief spiritual beings that control the Earth Element. They exist in a plane very close to the vibrational level of Earth, are the most substantial of the elementals, and reflect the essence of earth itself. Traditionally their main purpose is to maintain the physical structure and well being of the Earth. Theirs it the energy of Earth itself.
They are responsible for all the diverse colors and forms that natural life expresses as animal, vegetable, or mineral. They work with the soil itself, rocks, stones, gems, minerals, and plants. They are the protectors of secret treasures hidden beneath the earth. Most Earth Elementals dwell in holes, mines, or caverns. Some, however, live in the forests, like the Pans, or even live within the plants they take care of, like the Hamadryads.
Most Earth Elementals are slow to trust, but devoted when trust in won. However, be warned NEVER betray one since they can be very vengeful and formidable enemies!
Gnomes can help instill confidence, steadfastness, and endurance. They teach us that the earth provides all we need to grow, survive, and be happy. They can also bring gloom, melancholy, and despair, so be wary.
When used in magick, they are mostly called on to locate lost objects, to find rich deposits of ore, oil, natural gas, or gems (and so on), and to reveal the locations of buried treasure, etc. Before there were reliable banks, many individuals buried their wealth (usually in the for of gold or silver) and called upon an Earth Elemental to protect it, usually in return for favors such as food or drink (spirits for the spirit). Many earth Elementals will also help with physical human work for such rewards. They can also help develop the psychic abilities of Psychometry and Dowsing. These Elementals can also aid with stone healing and herbal medication.
In general their higher purpose is to help humans learn about, understand, and work in harmony with the energies and life forms of nature. They show us that every tree, rock, flower, and indeed, all life has a spirit and therefore has something to teach us. They can help us become aware of our physical senses and to develop mastery of them. They also can inspire up to create objects from natural sources, especially in art, as they are skilled in craftwork.
In appearance most of them are small. Some are short and stocky. They can take on both male and female form. Even when viewed in psychic form, most tend to resemble little men and women. The Tree Spirits, however, tend to look like the plant in which they live. It has been said that the spirits of poisonous plants are frightening to look at. Usually, though, it is easier to feel the presence of an Earth Elemental rather than seeing one. They are most easily viewed in their natural environment at dusk. They are most like us in personality, also, with all its good and bad points, and are especially prey to all the weaknesses in human nature since they are earth-centered and concerned with wealth and other aspects of materialism.
In the human body and the bodies of other creatures, they Earth Elementals tend to work with the bones and help keep our mineral composition and chemical bonds in a healthy balance. They help us become aware of our bodies and try to teach us to listen to our body’s needs.
