How do you set yours up? What does it mean to you as a Wiccan/Witch, and what do you like to put in it? Do you see your book of shadows as a magical tool, or is it simply a journal in your practice?

My book of shadows is my recipe book, my journal, my magickal formulary and keeps all my most personal journeys inside of it. Its a one of a kind BOS made by a leather crafter and is designed to last for generations to pass my knowledge on to my successor if I should choose one. It is my most precious and guarded treasure.

I keep a journal...I have since I was 13 or 14, though I don't have ANY of my original work. It fell in the creek one night Now I use a fancy (though definitely not one of a kind) binder that I can always ad more pages to. The thing that still gets me about loosing the last one aside from being all my first work is that the pages were ALL genuine parchment and all written in Dragon's blood ink. In the one I have now, I keep all my poetry, spell work, meditation work, etc....Come to think of it...My book is allot more to me than a journal too. While I don't necessarily see it as a necessity, it does hold pieces of my spirit.

my bos is pretty simple. i use a 3-ring binder with dividers to keep track by subject. i just keep notes about my rituals, sabbats and esbats, astral projections, dreams, qabalah notes, and other things. i view my bos more of a note book rather than any kind of magical tool.

I have a folder inside a folder that I have been using, but I have had the idea of the floppy disk book of shadows recently. At least I can password that stuff. And it has unlimited storage.
I use it as a reference, a diary, somewhere to put my auto writing, a tool. But I don't have the attitude of ...."DON'T TOUCH THAT, it's sacred!" More like, keep your nose out, it's private.

I know alot of people who do the floppy disk of shadows.. its very handy to have I have somethings on puter too. Nothing wrong with a notebook of shadows at all. I just happened to stumble onto my BOS online at a great price. Shortly after they went out of business and so my first of a kind became a one of a kind I loooooveee my BOS .. for a decade I never wrote anything down lol. I have to admit I don't like prying eyes in mine either and I definetely do not like people even touching it. (Not sure why but it really irritates the crap out of me if they do) I suppose because that represents such a private part of my life that to be honest I just don't want to share.

I personally keep a separate binder for my studies and research (Which btw desperately needs to be organized), due to the fact that the journal is in fact an ever growing ever evolving work in progress. I keep a chapter on dreams, a chapter on practical work (i.e. meditation, trance work, mental, spiritual and physical journeys etc etc), a chapter for poetry, and Imbas, spell work etc. I would love to keep it all in one book...However after so many years of practice.

I don't blame you two a bit for wanting to keep it private. It doesn't really matter how open someone gets with a spouse or even children, there are at times things a person just wants to keep private. I don't really care for the thought of sharing mine either to tell the truth of the matter, though I doubt I'd fly off the handle or anything (not saying either of you would either btw) if I caught someone thumbing through it... Maybe the whole "floppy disk of shadows" is a pretty good idea. It just seems like it would be easy to forget important details of a dream, or some meditation or trance in the time it tales to log on and start typing.

That's why you keep the notebook ect. and then just type it in later. Or not, have a dream book. I still cannot remember dreaming, have not been able to meditate or go into deep trances (frustrated face is needed but this is close enough), so I don't have that issue. Some people have a problem with the fact that with the floppy disk is that things aren't done by hand and you don't have same energies put into it, but I feel that you have to put the energy in to press the keys, you are still imprinting your energy. shrugs* it's mainly the password tho. I've got a prying partner AND kids, so I need either a password or a really good mousetrap....SNAP! ;D

Also, I'm thinking of working on our smilies some in the near future after the chat room is up n running. Well it seems like the typing is still pretty personal though I suppose I see their point....I guarantee, the first time I tried to look through your book and got my fingers in a mouse trap...I wouldn't be trying to look through it again.
