The people of the Lakota, are what is know as a nation of "plains Indians" more commonly known as the Sioux. Originally they spanned as far as Minnesota, western Wisconsin, northern Iowa, as well as the Dakotas where they are the best know. Around the 17 and 1800's the Lakota nations began to move toward the Missouri river where they are today.
The Lakota have captured imaginations in a way few others ever have. Think for example of the of feather-bedecked people on horse back on the great prairie hunting the buffalo, or fighting the cavalry, tepees, and peace pipes. Each are very common Lakota traits (Though certainly found within other tribes as well) which define a cultural history. Some of the most famous Indians in history, like Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, and today..The Shaman Black Elk.
Firstly on our list we can discuss "Anog Ite" meaning the double faced woman, the daughter of Skan and the wife of Tate. Anog Ite is caught in the act of seducing "Wi" and is sentence to wear two faces. These faces are absolute oposites...One Beautiful, and the other terrible and hideous. She is thought to embody a turning away from tradition, a figure of disharmony with nature and inner being. She is said to appear to young women in their dreams to teach them the fine art of "Quilling". Quilling is a difficult art by which the crafter matches, dyes, and attaches porcupine quills to a ceremonial robe. She also teaches other crafts but this one stands out above the rest IMO. The role of the Quiller is/was a highly valued skill among the Lakota nation. The Quillers didn't follow the social norms, as they would never marry, and often became lesbians.
