"Primary chief poet I am to Elffin but my native land is in the summer stars, Blaise the holy called me Merlin, but future kings shall call me Taliesin. I was nine full months in Kerridwen's womb, Before I was Gwion, Now I am Taliesin. I carried the banner before Alexander, I know the names of the stars from North to South. I was in Llys Don before the birth of Gwydion, I was three times held in the Prison of Arianrhod. I was in Africa before Rome was built, I came at last to this remnant of Troy. I received the muse from Kerridwen's cauldron, I was the white mount and in Cynfelyn's court. I have sat in the seat above Caer Sidi, I continue to revolve between the elements. I am instructor to the whole universe, and no one knows if my body is fish or flesh." Now, as was discussed in part one of this study there are several steps, levels, and titles which need to be achieved and earned before one can properly take and maintain the title of Druid. We discussed earning the title of Celt, a Bard or Filidh (a sacred poet) however it seems to be the consensus that I left the Ovate's aspect a bit bare, so it is my hope that with this post I can make an easy to follow, easy to understand study of Celtic and Druidic Shamanism in-and-of it's self for others who may be interested in this path. One of the first things to consider is that Shamanism was and is deeply rooted and interwoven into the world of out Celtic ancestors. One form this takes for us as Druids and Celts was as totemic and spirit animals. This also took many forms such as one of the many aspects of "Feth Fiada" or changing one's shape to other world journeys to meet and work with guides, to animal visions. Each animal had a well documented meaning, both to the Druid Shamans and to the Celtic people. Examples of this can even be found in the names of Celtic tribes, like the Epidii of Kintyre, or the people of the horse, the Caerini or Sheep people, and the Lugi or the people of the raven, out of Sutherland, Cornavii of Caithness or the people of the horn, Taurisci or Bull folk, Cattraighe or the cat folk, and the list goes on and on. These tribal totems would have had several functions to the Celtic people, such as guidance for the clan, guardians of the tuath, even power animals to the Druids and Shamans of a particular Celtic tribe. There is no doubt in the minds of scholars that these people would have had their own individual totems as well revealed to them by the Druids or even a clan Shaman. In the practice of Draíocht the totems are usually discovered first, this can be done in a myriad of ways. Usually a Druid will have three primary totems (just knew it would be three didn't you?). The Druids totems represent his inner being in association of the Druid's understanding of land, sea, and sky. As an example I will lay out my personal totems: Land- The Bull Sky- The Hawk Sea- The Salmon Every aspect of myself is shared with these three animals, the are life long guides and allies. They actually came to me in different periods of my life, but were actually revealed during trance, vision, and experience. The Bull came to me in my childhood, and a select few people know of this encounter...LoL you know who you are. The hawk pointed the way for me during a very dark, very traumatic time in my life, and the Salmon came to me in a vision as I self initiated as an ordained Druid. However with the exception of the Salmon I didn't know they were an inseparable part of me until they were revealed to me though vision quests and trance. When an Ovate or Druid Shaman is in training we learn to take the forms of out totems. I have a bull's hide I use while practicing the shape-shifting aspect of Feth Fiada, as the hide hold great power, symbolism, and meaning for me as both a Druid and as a man, it gets me "into character" before and during the "bull dance" where I "become" the bull. This is accomplished through strict trance and Dichetal Do Chennaibh (Illumination through drumming, singing, and/or chanting). I see through the Bull's eyes...I feel with his heart, think with his mind, and react with his body, for such is the way of the shape-shifter....I can feel his heat and passion even as I write this. Singing, chanting, and drumming also are an important practice. Such things are usually a way of aiding others in other world journeys, however the singer, chanter, and/or drummer enters a self induced trance of their own. For example, a chant or song can empower us from the inside out when the proper pitch is found, usually a deep powerful that vibrates the entire body, pulling and leading the minds and spirits into other realms of consciousness, and the body into a primal dance of creation and physical poetry. Drumming beats in time with the drummer and synchronizes other heart beats with his/her own, it beats into the bones and boils the blood, tickles the hair on your arms and legs and when the mixture is complete it sends us spiraling with the inner dances, and from there through the elemental abyss. *breaths* (This is why I usually don't write about Shamanism lol, I get all excited). Individual shamanism becomes a way to challenge every aspect of the self. Just as in Bardcraft we work to pull inner poetry from every aspect of spirit through the rigors of mental training, Shamanic training teaches us to pull physical poetry from the infinite human spirit, we meet with the ancestors, the great wisdom keepers and totems which help the Druid complete the creation of Ireland which awaits within each of us. By-and-large Shamanism is a healing path, we work to heal the earth and others, but this can never be accomplished with out healing the triads of the self. Shamanism teaches the Druid that the unbound mind can acquire wisdom that is beyond the limits of this reality, it teaches that Spirit acts through mind and nature. It teaches that power in nature as well as nature it's self is a matter of subjective perception, and that perception can be altered when consciousness harnesses the power of truth. Becoming a Druid is something anyone can do if they are dedicated, stead fast, and sufficiently connected to spirit. Druidry is a path fed by a deep river of knowledge in tradition and putting that knowledge into mental, physical, and spiritual practice. It is a journey of many winding flows, it isn't something that is given over the course of a day, month, or year, but is a lifetime of service to one's people. My people are the PaganMystics, and together we dance the twofold pathway on one leg, we seek the truth beyond the limitless darkness to sing the songs of creation together. Senbecc
