was wondering about what people have on there alters and whether you have them up all the time?
my alter is a small rectangular table- an old coffee table and at the moment has my gemstones and geodes displayed it also has some candels and inscence on it. i cannot have my full alter out all the time
on my ritual alter is two large candles, my symbols of the lady- conch shell fariey statue and maiden mother crone candlestick, a pentacle, salt , iscence, candle and gemstones. i cover the table with a cloth on the sabbat rituals.
i would be interested to hear what others alters look like?

AS an eclectic and a kitchen witch my altar looks like whatever I need it to at the time. My daughter is almost three, so having something permanent is currently out of the question- then again, I've never been the type to have one anyway. My altar can just as easily be a patch of ground, my kitchen counter- or even a visualization in my mind.

Once moonwind and I get our livingroom re-sheet rocked (courtesy of Katrina) we'll have a secretaries desk that will be our main altar that can be closed up when company comes (noone will be the wiser). For operations though a large round table will be used .

I have a permanent shrine set up on the top of my high-boy. On it I've put my angel stuff, my God and Goddess candles, representations of the 5 elements and some of the other mystical stuff that I have. When I do ritual, I use a small coffee table and my tools, so that I can set up in the living room, where I have more room to work. That way, if partner wants to sleep, I don't bug him and I don't have to worry about the Heirophants who come to the house (with my daughter in Head Start, I get monthly home visits from the State, I have avoided any hassels with them, 'cause out of sight, out of mind! I have had friends lose their kids partially because of their beliefs. DSS here is awful!) seeing my stuff set up.

I have a permanent altar set up in my room, Lol, though considering I sit before it and make a prayer or offering at least once a day it would not make a great deal of sense to dismantle it every night. The altar itself is a large coffee table that I have covered with a black altar clothe depicting crows and ravens. On the altar, I have a somewhat complex fountain to represent the four elements and give them respect. The water comes up through a pile of river rocks and I have vines growing in the water around these stones, my way of representing Earth and Water. The fountain has a black metal stand connected to it with a glass base a short ways above the fountain, and on the surface of this glass I keep a small pile of sea salt. Also standing on the glass is a sort of candle/incense burner. The base of it is made of 3 oak leaves, and in the center you place a candle. The three oak leaves support a dish above this candle, in which you place your incense(I use frankincense). In this way, when I light the candle, it heats the dish and then the sap I use as incense so that it releases its smell and lightly smokes, which is how I represent Fire and Air. So my fountain(which I would never part with)is my altars ways of showing the unity of those elements. Also on my altar are red candles to symbolize the Morrigan’s war aspect, black for her death aspect, and silver ones for her change or transition aspect. Aside from that I have various gem stones, crow feathers, bones, statues, and other baubles that I feel appropriate for the altar. The pinnacle of it though is a sword that I value as my prized possession. It is a Japanese short sword with an undulating or ‘wave’ blade from World War II. Not only that, but the elderly Japanese man who gave it to me some years ago (I always mowed his yard for free, because he couldn’t do it himself and he had no relatives nearby to help him) told me that another soldier had tried to kill him once with a hatchet over a dispute. When the man wouldn’t stop he was forced to defend himself with the sword (there are actually three spots on the blade where it can be seen that it was struck) and then actually had to slay the man to stop his attack. I value this blade not just for its history and its symbolism of the Morrigan’s aspects, but because it was a gift from a wonderful old man who had seen many things.

I've always had a permanent alter but I sometimes have had to change what it is due to moving and I would love to get a wooden one someday but currently it is a medium size rubber maid container with a blue alter cloth that covers it up. At the Quarters I have a natural rock or shell or wood that symbolizes that particular aspect of the quarter. I have one candle and two small faceless statues that symbolize the Gods for me. I also have three distinctive pictures that hang slightly above it. My alter is kept very simple and easy for me to covert for whatever purpose I need it for since I meditate at it everyday. fireraven
