Willow or Saille is a peasant tree of intuitive development, and development of all psychic senses. It's sound is "S" and it's pronounced SAHL-yuh. Let's elaborate on the Ogham names for a second. For it is Willow which is the color of the lifeless one, owing it's color to the dead. The word Ogham of Moriann mc Moín says that Willow is of the hue of the lifeless, the color of one who is dead. The word Ogham of Cú Chulainn says that Willow is the beginning of loss, and in the word Ogham of Oengus, Willow is the strength of bees.
The visualization of Willow is actually fairly simple. There is a silver stream, which beautifully reflects the bright full moon's light, caught by a great willow tree.
So what does the Willow's tree letter Saille mean or symbolize to us? Saille is the sensitivity to a feeling, or intuition. It tells us that we need to not only pay attention to our outside influences, but also to our eternal realms of senses and impressions as well. You become like an experienced sailor on the sea. You sense the ever changing of the tides through your experiences in life as well as by sheer instinct. While it is indeed important to receive this flow and rhythm, you must also be careful that you don't become swamped by the impressions it can at times bring.
Saille is also at times described as having the "hue, or color of the lifeless, or of the dead which of course would be white or pale. This identifies it with the moon, which like the willow it's self associates it's self with water. This Ogham also corresponds to the divination of more feminine qualities of intuitive perception, emotion, and the myriad cycles of progress.
The "lifeless hue" the word Oghams mention sometimes would also link in many ways Saille with the spirit realm and the many psychic realms, as traditionally Willow was associated with Witchcraft, clairvoyance, and divination. Coming to understand these things help us to more readily understand what lies beyond "rational explanation" which intern leads to insight and development, eventually leading to enlightenment.
The Celts understood the importance of seership as a natural part of the fabric of life. People with "the sight" were often sought after and very well respected within a given community or tribe/clan. These many flows, and connections to spirit and the other worlds were developed, consciously, and actively sharpened through training, and practice as they were most valued by both the individual and clan just as they are today in many parts of Celtic communities.
Opening one's self to these currents is not only healthy it is very natural. It also leads one to feel their way into situations and thus into emotional sensitivity. However take care within these realms, as without some firm ground on which to stand the waves can often be overwhelming.
Saille is also at times identified as an ogham of love, however tends to lean more heavily towards dreams and illusions of love rather than actual romance and relationships. In a romance one is often inclined to fantasize and/or project qualities through imagination on the other person. These imagined qualities seldom last though.
Reversed this Ogham can symbolize being out of our depth, overwhelmed, even lost in infinity (like a sea). It means you need to surface for light and air. However be warned, the realm of Saille is a watery one and one can drown there very easily, or they can float through the many caves of unconsciousness and learning.
