Breathing is a fundamental of life, without breath you'd be dead right? So it stands to reason that breathing would be an important part of a person's practice. In the Irish tradition "goath" (breath) is associated with "Anam" (spirit or soul). Breath feeds the spirit, and through spirit "magical" power is discovered, built, and maintained. Breath is the power of creation and spirit is the fire which ever evolves. In this article I will cover some fundamentals of deep breathing. Deep breathing can clear the mind, center the body, relieve stress, and and purify the spirit. Most I know use deep breathing in some form when grounding and collecting before trance or deep meditation.
Firstly a person should be comfortable, wear comfortable cloths, and sit or lay comfortably. Relax the body just feel all the tension leave as you close your eyes and slow your thoughts. Let all the air comfortably exhale, when you're ready and relaxed inhale slowly for a count of 13 heart beats, or a good full breath and hold it for 9 more. Exhale for 13 heart beats so on and so fourth. Now comes the really important part. As you exhale, visualize and/or feel (if you have trouble with visualization) all that days tensions, negativities, and stress leaving your body with the exhaling breath. Push it out from the abdomen. As you hold that breath for 9 heart beats (or a comfortable amount of time) feel it as though a pressure valve has been released within letting out the built up negative, before you pull slowly in a breath of the positive, relaxing, grounding energy.
Some people like to root deep breathing in visualization, seeing negativity as dark smoke, and the positive as a golden or sometimes light blue light etc. I personally prefer to deal in feeling it, feeling the tension leave, and feeling the relaxation take it's place. A person should practice this around once or twice a day. I do such exercises when I wake, before sleep, and before a rite or ritual. If there are questions or comments then I leave the floor open to them, I will gladly add anything I may have left out.
