the religion of many of the ancient less-developed civilizations of the world. Some societies today are shamanistic. Shamanism is characterized by the ability of the Shaman to communicate with the spirit world to provide healing, guidance or wisdom.. The shaman’s soul is sometimes believed to leave the body during a trance at which time the shaman will speak with beings from the other worlds or assume animal forms.

Shamanism is one of the oldest tribal healing traditions found in many cultures around the world. The shaman, in an altered state of consciousness, uses forms of journeying to spirit worlds, along with prayer and ceremony to connect with the spirit animals or totems of the client. It is through this guidance the practitioner helps their client find a state of balance and well-being.

Shamanism is a range of traditional beliefs and practices that involve the ability to diagnose, cure, and sometimes cause human suffering by traversing the axis mundi and forming a special relationship with, or gaining control over, spirits. Shamans have been credited with the ability to control the weather, divination, the interpretation of dreams, astral projection, and traveling to upper and lower worlds. Shamanistic traditions have existed throughout the world since prehistoric times.

"Shaman" is a word that originates from the Tungus peoples of Siberia, though also embodies any practice of "Animism" (The belief that the whole universe is alive) especially Native American practices, some Celtic spiritualities and other "Less advanced" tribal cultures around the world. Shamanism was once defined by the late Mircea Eliade as being a technique of ecstasy through which one enters an altered state of consciousness to contact and use some hidden force or spirit to acquire a previously unknown reality and/or knowledge.
One characteristic of Shamanism which separates it from other paths is this focus on ecstatic trance states, by which the spirit leaves the body and ascends to the sky or into the land.
It is also most important to note that Shamanism isn't a gender bias practice...Both men and women can become Shamans. Shamans make use of a wide variety of other worldly helpers like spirit guides, Totem/spirit animals, the powers of the 4 elements (earth, sun, sky, and sea) as well as the 4 directions.
In the old days, in Ireland, Druids and Faery shamans and/or witches would work within a cave where the senses of the body would be completely cut off (This was known as the cave of learning). This works well with the study I am doing on the subject at hand. The Shaman is a see'er who works in the dark, or at least with the eyes covered in order to "see clearly", usually practicing at night, such states are often aided by drumming, singing, chanting, dancing, and the use of rattles.
Shamanistic Enlightenment is the literal ability to lighten the darkness and see what others cannot perceive.
