Someone recently pointed out this verse of the Bible to me:
"Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord; no deeds can compare with yours." -Psalms 86:8
I can't believe I haven't seen that one until recently!!

The Jews and Christians certainly wouldn't have been the first to use the "one god" idea, perhaps this is simply how they felt, that among the gods the Shepard god was the best god...Then like the Celtic gods (Each being born of Danu) the other "gods" became Arch Angels?

The Bible never say The Lord is the only God, but warn His followers all the time not to worship other gods - so our Christian God acknowledge other gods, but proclaim Himself as the King of all. The bible also tell us of constant wars fought in the heavens. Now i am a Christian, but I can't help wondering - If God is almighty - why do I get this feeling of unsecurity if one is so constantly warned of others and even threatened with all kinds of punishments, brimstone and hellfire if you wander of the Road??

That's a good point. I'm a Christian myself, and know that some people would say that God is warning man out of love. But that seems to imply that God has no control over consequences. You wouldn't have to warn somebody of wandering off a path if you could change the path on a whim. So either God doesn't have control or won't exercise control. Following the idea that God is all-powerful, then you're left with the assumption that He won't exercise control. Maybe it's the same as a parent setting up rules for a child. The parent loves the child and might flex some rules, but they are ultimately inviolate. Those rules are based on moral or ethical standards, so it would seem that God has constrained himself to standards he himself has created. Shades of Deism seem to become apparent when it appears that God set up a system of rules and lets the world operate within them without exercising power to influence anything. It's an interesting question and I'm sure we could spend eternity trying to find an answer that everyone could accept, but without blurring some lines that separate some religious beliefs from others, we're stuck.

I think that it's because the "Word of God" has to come thru hu-man. Hu-men are jealous, they are insecure and the foibles of man are reflected in the bible. Many hu-men operate better with the threat of hellfire and brimstone, and eternal damnation. It kind of takes away the responsibility of their actions. God/dess is like a parent, in my opinion. There are rules that are set and we are given the freedom to choose if we follow those rules. It's part of the learning process, and if the parent takes over, we don't learn from our successes or failures. God/dess mourns the failures, but understands the need and s/he rejoices in the successes. a side note on the other issue in the topic, Gnostic Gospels...again it was the decision of a group of men what was included in the finalized new testament in the 1300's. It was decided by the leader's agenda, and if he didn't like an idea, it was heresy. Reincarnation, the importance of women (which is why Mary Magdalene is marginalized) and other ideas in the Gnositic Gospels that aren't included weren't what ?constantine? wanted to uphold so out they went.
