So, I was on break today when I caught the latest Time Magazine cover. This is the story cover: www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1601845,00.html My question is: Who thinks this is a good idea?

Hmmmm.... I see no problem with it at the High School level as an elective course... if it were to be implemented as a requirement and at the lower grade levels, I would have a problem with it...

I do feel they do need to offer other religions as courses as well. Not only that but there are WAY too many different Bibles to go by. Book of Matthew, The King James, etc... Each Bible has it's own interpretation of what was written (I had this discussion with my sister (the Jehovah's Witness). She uses a newer one that is a complete translator. In other words, it has the word in question with a reference attached to it. Makes it very easy reading as far as I'm concerned. But I still think that if you do offer this as reading material, you need to have enough material for the other religions. America, after all, is a melting pot. It has a diverse group of peoples & religions. If you can offer one religion, another one should be offered as well. That's my opinion anyway......

Ok I haven't read the entire article yet but I'll start being opinionated right now anyways. I think having the option of religious studies at the HS level is a great idea! I think more than christianity should be offered or at the least examined along with christianity. The comparison to the rest of the worlds religions is one of the best ways to keep it a learning thing rather than an indoctrination thing. I wasn't raised in a christian environment (at least not more so than anyone else in our society) I would have loved to have had a class like this when I was in school. I considered going to bible study classes several times to learn more about the bible but I was always disgusted by the way it has to be "learning why the bible is right" rather than just "learning about the bible" ya know? Anyways I think this is a great idea if done responsibly.

IMO, if you're not going to teach them all, then you shouldn't teach any....

I feel that if there is going to be study of religion in schools, then have the guts to put them all out there. Not just the ones you feel are right for the, "children". I am obviously referring to older teens here. I was in high school when the whole, "take prayer out of school," happened. There was a group of rebels who were mostly spurred on by their parents, but they gathered in front of the school every morning and prayed. For about a week and a half.

While I agree with the sentiment I have to say that it would be virtually impossible to teach "all" the worlds religions in a HS setting. You couldn't fit them all into one class and the tax payers are not gonna wanna pay a teacher to teach a class with only 2 kids in it.

Which is why I personally don't feel any religion should be taught in school...There is a time and place for everything, and the kind of study that goes on in a public school isn't the place for any of it...IMHO.

I remember when I was 17, these Girl Marcy Woolridge had the biggest crush on me. I was already a hopeless Pagan by then but I kept it quiet...She was always trying to get me to come to church with her (as a first date ugh) and I'd tell her I couldn't cause Sunday was my fishing day (and it was lol). I just felt it would be like lying to her. Well one day it got out, cause this other girl just thought is was soooooo cool.......Marcy damn near shit me a golden brick, wouldn't even LOOK at me anymore, said she could just see the evil in my eyes...Her brother even tried to beat me up for being a devil worshipper and casting spells on his sister lol...That's why those kinds of topics should be kept out of public schools...You just invite the BS.
