I've recently been reading 1984 again; it's not necessarily one of my favorite books, but it's up there. I'm also skimming through The Republic. I'm finding it much more authoritarian than I believed it would be. Even so, I still think 1984 could also be called "The Dark Republic." I was wondering if anyone had ever compared the two and come up with any ideas comparing/contrasting them.

oh, I suppose this could be put on the Discussion board, but there wasn't really a category that seemed appropriate and I didn't want a topic just hanging out there under the sub-boards since it looked all nice and neat. Anyway, Socrates (or Plato) was a big "elenchus-user" so I thought it'd be ok to have this thread under the Debate section.

OK, I've only read 1984 ... now it looks like I'm going to have to read The Republic if I want to get in on this debate. Dang, all these questions and interesting facts are gonna keep me busy for a while!

oh yeah, mentioning the authors would've been helpful, huh? haha sorry. You're right, moon, it's Plato. He wrote most of the Socratic dialogues which are the only record of Socrates' teachings so Plato and Socrates are kind of interchangeable when talking about their opinions. So sometimes I'll say Plato, sometimes Socrates, but I mean the same guy for the most part. Oh, just a minor note, The Republic is divided up into 10 books ... but don't be discouraged. The entire work is smaller than 1984. It adds up to around 200 pages.
