THE ELEMENT WATER
Water is the element of purification, love, the subconscious mind, and the emotions. It is the element of absorption (rain falling on the fields, morning dew on the grass, irrigation both natural and manmade) and germination (the birth of all living things, even humans are born from water). It also represents endurance and tenacity. Over a period of time water can vanquish even the rocks of the earth and can bestow on us the same fortitude. Water is thought to be the Universal force of contraction.
Water is a vital necessity of life, second only to air, and its sacredness rests partially upon this dependence. Water sustains us – we must drink water to survive, water eliminates toxins from our bodies, when we experience our greatest joys and sorrows we give up our most precious water – tears. And the saltiness of our tears, blood, and other body fluids is said to be a reminder that all live began in the sea, which is still reflected in our lives in the form of our subconscious that is always rolling, always moving, never at rest – like the sea.
Water is also the symbol of our emotions. Just as water is fluid, constantly changing, flowing from one level to another, so too are our emotions in a constant state of flux. As water has tidal movements, we flow with the “tide” of our feelings. A low water person could appear to be cold and calculating, one who is indifferent and unresponsive. On the other hand, a high water person may seem over-emotional and over-dramatic in all areas of life. A good balance is needed to keep the emotions flowing smoothly, just as the correct level of water keeps a stream running smoothly.
Water is the realm of fertility, the womb, semen, conception, and pregnancy – in other words, Life. Yet many of our ancestors also associated water with death. “Sailing West” was a euphemism for dying as one would surely fall off the edge of the world if sailing too far out on the Atlantic Ocean. Likewise, the Sun “died” each evening by sinking into the water in the west. In this way the Element of Life – Water – also became the Element of Death. And this is not entirely without merit, for death is the only way one can be reborn.
On the whole, however, Water is mainly associated with beauty, with joy, and with the happiness of life. It is also connected to memory, ancestors (genealogy and family trees), and past lives. There is a heavy water involvement with intuition and insight, meditations and visualizations.
Divination is a large part of Water magick and many operations include the use of mirrors, the sea, fog, and rain. Water magick involves workings for pleasure, friendship, marriage, fertility, happiness, healing, sleep, dreaming, psychic acts, purification, and so on. Water magick can also be used for matters such as attracting wealth, joy, opportunity, and abundance or to banish things like stagnation, brooding, and foreboding. Symbolically blue crystals/gems represent the element Water, as would any pictorial representative of water. An operation with water quite often ends with an object being tossed or placed in or on a body of water.
In summary, the Element Water with its ability to conquer everything over time is the perseverance need to endure. It allows us to continue onward with a light heart despite any obstacles that may be thrown in our path.

THE WATER ELEMENTALS
Undines are the spiritual beings that inhabit and control the Element Water. Though there are many different types of Water Elementals – Mermaids, Water Sprites, Oreades, and Sea Nymphs, just to name a few – water is chiefly ruled by the Undines. They cause the ocean waves and help the tides. Some guard streams, lakes, and fountains. They can inhabit waterfalls or live in rivers. It is said that every streamlet and fountain has a guardian water spirit.
Etheric in nature, they exist not only in the water itself, but also in substances of humidity and all other liquids. They can be found in marshlands as well as in oceans. They control the forces of nature in relation to plant and marine life. They also have the job of bringing beauty to the world. Theirs is the energy of creation, birth, intuition, and emotional expression. Undines are fluid in nature and movement, very sensual and graceful, with very strong emotions. They are the most human and seductive of the four elemental types and tend to be sympathetic and loving. Since the Undines are such emotional beings, very friendly and open to being of service to humans, care must be taken if working with them for they can have a strong influence upon a person’s emotional well-being.
Magickally Undines are responsible for awakening empathy, healing, and emotional release. They can be called on for any magick concerning emotions. They can help maintain the astral body and awaken hidden emotions. They may be used to assist in developing heightened psychic awareness as well as emotional expressions. They can be called upon to help us absorb, remember, and assimilate life experience. Undines are most helpful when dealing magickally with issues such as love and friendship, desire and lust, and to develop intuition, clairvoyance, lucidity in dream work, and help for fully conscious out-of-body experiences.
In appearance all the water elementals are usually described as being very beautiful. They are the most graceful of all the elementals. The smaller Undines can have gossamer wings and shining garments and have been mistaken for fairies, as they are often seen near the flowers or plants that grow in watery areas. Other Undines closely resemble humans in appearance and size, like the Merpeople. Whenever they do physically appear they will take on a beautiful form. They can present themselves in the most enticing, seductive, and appealing forms. This is probably where the stories of sailors being lured to their deaths originated. When seen with a psychic focus they mainly appear as moving tubes of water, usually in natural bodies of water, but they have been known to play in swimming pools or even a bathtub.
If they want to make their presence known to you in a direct and physical way while in an incorporeal form you may feel a pull toward water or sense a shift or focus of energy in the water itself. They may also make gurgling sounds or even splash you. They can also take the physical form of sea creatures such as seals (Selkies) and dolphins. Around smaller bodies of water they may appear as amphibious creatures like turtles or frogs.
In the physical bodies of humans and other creatures the Undine energies work with body fluids and vital essences such as blood, lymphatic, and spinal fluids, helping to maintain their proper function and balance.
