THE ELEMENT AIR
Air is the Element of thought, mind, and the intangibles that we know exist but cannot prove. It is the breath we take in. It is with us every day or our lives, from birth to death. It is thought to be the Universal force that reconciles expansion (Fire) and contraction (Water). It is the element of the intellect; it is the realm of thought which is the first step toward creation. The element of Air has the highest rate of vibration.
Air represents mental activity, thoughts, reason, intellect, memory, knowledge, persuasion, friendship, freedom, clarification, and expression. A low Air person would seem without any direction and unable to define or visualize any future or reason out the alternative and objectives. A high Air person is at ease in complex situations and can sit and think things through, then carry through with decisions.
Just as our thoughts are extremely powerful, so are our words. Thoughts give rise to our desires and words can release them upon the winds for attainment. They can be crafted, complex, and ritualistic or just a simple sentence. Words can be used in moments of stress and fear, which can create an atmosphere of concentrated awareness and strength.
Air rules operations involving travel, instruction, freedom, obtaining knowledge (it is the Element that excels in places of learning, it’s the one at work when we think, theorize, and ponder), uncovering lies, and so on.
Air is the element that can be used to develop the psychic abilities of telepathy, divination, and prophesy. It is best for astrology, empaths, seerers, and astral plane workings. It rules divination (except with water), concentration, and visualization magick. Magickally speaking, Air is clear, uncluttered, pure visualization, which is a powerful tool for change. It is also movement, the impetus that sends visualization out toward manifestation. Symbolically yellow gemstones/crystals represent Air, as do any pictorial links that can be used during an air operation.
Air is the gentle breeze in spring, the cooling wisp in summer, the hurricane and tornado, the harbinger of change in fall, and the driving icy blast in winter. It governs the Four Winds. Just remember, Air magick can be as unpredictable as the winds themselves.
THE NORTH WIND (BOREAS) is the wind of death, though not necessarily that of physical death. This is the realm of the one eternal, universal, law – change! The North Wind is cold (physically and magickally) blowing in as it does from the direction of winter. It is “dry” or barren and thus when it is blowing can be used for operations of destruction such as a bad habit, or freeing yourself if you feel depressed, anxious, envious, jealous, or angry. The North Wind can greatly aid in healing. The color of the North Wind is the black of midnight.
THE EAST WIND (EURUS) is that of freshness, renewed life, strength, power, and intellect. It is a warm, bracing wind that blows from the direction the Sun, Moon, and Stars appear and carries with it the spark of creation. So, it is the wind of new beginnings. Magickal operations best done when the wind blows from the East are those concerning dramatic improvements and changes for the better, especially in behavior, or any operations involving the mind. Since the East is the direction of sunrise and light, the color of the East Wind is white.
THE SOUTH WIND (NOTUS) is hot and fiery since it symbolically comes from when the Sun is at its highest point in the sky – noon – the time of the greatest light and heat. The South Wind blowing is always a good time for any type of operation. Since this wind is strong and hot, workings are assured an extra jolt of power. The color of the South Wind, like the color of the Sun, is yellow.
THE WEST WIND (ZEPHYRUS) is that which blows cool and moist. It may carry with it rain or mist to cover the land. It is a gentle, fertile, loving force. Workings concerning love, healing, fertility, cleansing, etc. are enhanced when the wind blows from the west. The West Wind is the blue of the sky at twilight.
As you can see the Four Winds are at least superficially related to the elements that rule that direction, which can be kept in mind for operations. But each wind has its own powers peculiar to itself. (NOTE: This explanation of the winds is based in favor of North America and Europe. Changes may be necessary for your own area, especially south of the equator.)
In summary, Air is the element of the intellect; it is thoughts, ideas, and change as is reflected by the statement “the winds of change”. It represents the conception and/or perception of a new idea, the seed of knowledge, and the freedom to choose which direction to move.

THE AIR ELEMENTALS
Sylphs are the spiritual beings that inhabit and control the Air element. They are responsible for the creation of air, the atmosphere, weather, and the proper currents around the Earth. They help create everything from a slight breeze to a dust devil to a full scale tornado. They, along with the other Air Elementals Fairies, are also responsible for the growth and maturity of all the plant life we see around us, with the exception of water plants. Their activities are also manifest in the formation of the snowflake, the gathering of the clouds, and the downpour of rain in conjunction with the Water Elementals, the Undine.
Sylphs are active, quick of movement and speech. They are clever and intelligent and can be subtle in their persuasiveness. Sylphs are associated with the activity of the mind and can influence and inspire human action. It is generally thought that they are quite attracted to poets, writers, and artists of all kinds and instill them with visions of spiritual beauty. It has been suggested that the Muses of Greek mythology were actually Sylphs who had assumed human form in order to guide humans on a spiritual path.
Sylphs and Fairies have great intelligence and see the true nature of things. They are generally happy creatures, though they can change their minds quickly. They prefer to live in the mountains, but they are also restless and don’t like to stay in one place very long, so they tend to wander around a lot.
If used in magick, they are best called on for help that involves the intellect; products of the mind such as art, letters, books, ideas, or the persuasion of others through ideas. They can lead humans to material books or other sources which can be beneficial in terms of study and learning. They can also educate humans who ask during the dream state. They can be employed to search out occult, esoteric knowledge since they have access not only to the libraries that physically exist, but also to those that gave been destroyed, but continue to exist on the astral plane as well as to libraries that have never had material existence in our world.
When asked, Sylphs can help us maintain our mental body and mental development. They help stimulate new knowledge, creativity, and inspiration. They can assist us in using the intuitive and rational together. Though they mostly communicate with us through thought and hearing, they can sometimes cause prophetic dreams. They can also help us develop the psychic abilities of clairaudience and telepathy.
While there is little danger in working with Sylphs, they do have stimulating, changeable energy. It may be calm and refreshing, then become gale-like in intensity. The ability to handle working with Sylphs is mostly determined by our ability to control our own minds.
In appearance Sylphs tend to look like translucent, ethereal humans or like very air spirits, some with wings like the Fairies. Fairies, in fact, are said to be very beautiful, active and very benevolent. They may also take the form of flashes of light in a clear blue sky. When they want to make their presence known in a direct of physical way while still incorporeal, they may play with you by blowing your hat or newspaper or whatever just out of reach. Occasionally they may take form as a winged insect or bird that is there one second and gone the next.
In the human body and the bodies of other creatures, Sylphs work with the brain, the nervous system, and the gases. They work to alleviate pain and suffering and help us assimilate oxygen from the air we breath.
