Herbal teas are not only soothing. They can be used to heal and cure. Magic resides in the herbs, as it does in all living things, and to tap into that magic is to find healing for the mind and body.
For nine weeks, I have carefully crafted a tea to address the myriad of symptoms I experience from my MS. From pain to seizures, each herb has been individually ground by hand in my mortal and pestle, while each being charged to do their own thing. One half teaspoon of each herb is added to the mixture, bagged in teabags and tied with three knots. I drink two 8oz. cups of this tea a day.
Nine is a number of great meaning and power. There are nine herbs. I heat the water for the tea for nine minutes and steep the tea bag for nine minutes as well, all while charging the purified water and herbs to target specific symptoms.
While combining the mixture, I recite the following:
Cinnamon, anise, rosemary
Mint and thyme and fennel seed
Rosehips, birch and chamomile
All will improve the way I feel
Three knots tied, to see it done
Banish illness with knot one
Make me whole with knot two
Third knot, make me see it through
No more illness will there be
And no more pain inside of me...
I have also used meditation and visualization, picturing the lesions in my brain (seen as bright spots on MRIs) as going out like a darkened light bulb. I have focused intensely on transcending my pain and regulating my body temperature with focus and concentrated effort with great success. I am also using meditation and focus when preparing my meals, visualizing the origins and growth of each ingredient and what they will heal in my body. This ties me to the Earth once more, seeing my own roots in the roots of the plants that bore my meal and my tea. Reconnecting with nature and the Earth are vital to healing such illness as MS (IMHO). I also believe that it is in the 'work'... the growing/gathering of the herbs, the grinding by hand and charging of each ingredient, the enchanting of the tea while it is brewed... that the healing and magic begin.
This regimen, combined with a four-week raw juice/water fast, and now whole raw food diet, has seen the relief of symptoms that have had no relief in many years. It is important to note that the combination of herbs is specific to my condition. Also, when making herbal teas for the first time, use one ingredient for a period of days, then add the second and so on. This will allow you to know, if you have a reaction, to which herb you are reacting.
If you are under a physician's care for any medical condition, be certain they know what herbs you are consuming, regardless of whether they approve or not... as herbs contain chemicals that can react with prescription and non-prescription meds as well as with one another.
Why these nine herbs for me? MS is considered an autoimmune disease of the nervous system. Lesions form in the brain, which cause the affected nerves to short-circuit, like an electrical wire that has lost its insulation. My symptoms were intense pain throughout my entire body and skin, no sense of hunger or other bodily functions, severe absence seizures causing speech loss and weakness, generalized weakness in my arms, intense reaction to heat, no sense of hot or cold in the skin on my legs and more.
My Herbs
Cinnamon - stimulates the mind and senses
Anise - prevents seizures
Rosemary - stimulates the blood, purifying
Mint - stimulates digestion
Thyme - lowers body temperate, prevents seizure, stimulates thyroid
Fennel seed - prevents seizures
Rosehips - boosts immune system, source of vitamin C
Birch bark - analgesic
Chamomile - soothes stomach and relaxes
Since beginning this regime, my pain has been noticeably reduced, both internally and in my skin. I now feel when I am hungry and full. I have had no seizures. I am better able to regulate my body heat. My ability to focus, concentrate and remember has been noticeably improved. My legs can sense temperature, even just slightly warmer or cooler. My fingers and arms are improving to the point where I am once again able to draw and I have begun carving wood as well.
