The circle has also been used for other things than ritual, such as a circle of salt around your house for protection or a circle of brick dust around a business to bring in customers. Plus different magickal systems use the circle a bit differently. In Wicca the circle is used more to keep in the power raised ("cone of power") and to a lesser extent to keep negative forces out, while in Ceremonial Magick the circle is used more to keep negative forces out and lesser to keep power in.
The circle has also been used for eons by many different peoples from the ancients (Babylonian, Roman) to the middle ages, through to today. Even the aborigianals of most cultures, including my people, used the circle ... the American Indians danced in a circle, held/hold drum circles, and so forth. The circle has been held sacred by so many peoples through the ages.

have you seen the terminology i pit up? its not about portability so much as creating a "sacred space" where ever you are. In this sacred space you are blocking out the negative, and keeping all the positive in. (simply put) yep yep! I was reading through the terminology when the thought occurred. The similarity of other religions' sacred spaces and the circle came to mind. Many other religions' sacred spaces are permenant. I was just wondering why witchcraft never embraced such structures. The spaces seem to function the same way, except that one is always there and one must be re-created each time. Newlyn got me thinking about visualizing (good point, btw). I guess that's also expressed in the gospel of St. Thomas when it says: "Split a piece of wood; I am there. Lift up the stone, and you will find me there."
