Now this isn't supposed to start a pissing contest or anything, and I certainly don't mean to suggest that one tradition is better or worse than any other (or indeed, anymore or less valid than any other religion.) It's just my curiuosity. I've been looking online about wicca, and it seems some traditions (such as Gardnerian and Alexandrian) have only been around very recently (i.e. the last century).

Technically you are completely correct. Gardner is credited with the 'creation' of Wicca in the 40's or 50's (depending on which "expert" you ask). Gardner claimed that Wicca is based on the ancient craft practiced for ages that could only "come out" after the witchcraft laws were done away with in England. So, this is one of the great debates concerning Wicca ... is it really a continuation of ancient beliefs or is it a construct of a small group of people during the 20th century. In all honesty, there is no way (to my knowledge) to prove definitively one way or another how old Wicca really is. But, as I have said many times, long ago even Christianity was only 50 years old and look what happened to it! <grin>.

yes, the larger trads like Gardnerian and Alexandrian are young because Wicca is young! I started out learning the Alexandrian trad. but since then i`ve done my own thing. I could have learned a lot more if I stuck with it but cant do anything about it now lol

The respect you've shown here is most appriciated. Wicca is a new religion or perhaps a class of seperate religions which draw their philosophies from old pagan ways and cultures. I've come to concider that Wicca is a class of religions which embrace a given cultures practice of Witchcraft, since Witchcraft in and of it's self isn't a religion at all.
