may i ask...what is 4th of july???!!! That is a singular American holiday. That was the day the American Colonies declaired indepence from England. So, July 4th is Independence Day - which we celebrate with Bar-B-Que, Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Apple Pie, Fireworks, and lots of cold beer (for those who like beer, which seems to be quite a few ;D). The fireworks are the best ... some places even better than New Years Eve.

I must admit I feel torn when I celebrate the 4th. First the Indiain part of me goes "huh"? And the Southern Belle part of me goes "huh"? Then the fireworks start and the BarBQues start to send out yummy smells and the rest of me tells the other two "shut up!" (I bet your cousin was 10 before he/she was told the party wasn't for her! )

I've never really had any problem celebrating the 4th. But, interesting little American History factoid here - until July 4, 1976 (the 200th "birthday" of the USA) the town of Vicksburg, Mississippi did not celebrate or recognize July 4th as a holiday because that was the day they were forced to surrender to the Union Army during the War Between the States. Of course, Vicksburg isn't exactly an isolated little town (in fact it is a fair sized town for Mississippi), so it was very easy to drive a few miles to any fireworks show! But, I gotta hand it to 'em. They stuck by their principles for many years!
