Snow Tree was a talented healer and was studying the Medicine Ways with a Holy Man from his Clan. The final part of his training had to do with combining the talents of herbal cures, dreaming, counseling, diagnosis, Tribal Law and history, Medicine Stories and Sacred Ceremonies. In order to serve the People, he would have to know which exact part of his training would best facilitate the proper results. The Holy man watched without comment, as the people who needed assistance came one by one.
For one moon, Snow Tree worked alone for the People, while his teacher noted every decision, remedy, counseling session and Doctoring Ceremony. At the end of the moon cycle, the Wise One commented. Snow Tree had done well but he was still worried about one of his patients who had the wasting disease. The younger man had been well trained and he knew he could only do his best, but his mind’s nagging questions remained. The Holy Man saw his student’s anguish and spoke to Snow Tree, giving him a final lesson through the Wise One’s words.
“You have worked and learned with diligence, you have offered your gifts in integrity, and you have asked for spiritual guidance in all things. Now you must let go, surrendering yourself and your efforts to the unseen Healer. The Great Mystery offers you, and those who come for healing, the same gift. That gift can only be received if you let go. In giving over, not giving up, you will feel it. You may then come to know and to revere that gift; it is called the state of grace.” - Jamie Sams
