every wednesday here at the pub down the road theres a 'celtic jam session'..i saw it advertised at the music shop last week, so i bullied my parents in to taking me along. i love playing with others, and ive been dying for something like this!!! well, we got there and there were NO fiddlers, but 5 drummers, an irish flute, a handful of whistlers, piano accoridanists, a few of those, lots of guitars, and a singer, but everyone sang. and a couple of the women danced!! it was so great. after listening for about an hour, i finally decided i was gonna join them, at which point another fiddler came out and started playing with me. dad was talking to some of the guys, and apparently it started a while back with only 5 people, and its grown into a group of close to 30!! it was a fantastic experience, i loved it LOTS and the atmosphere was fantastic, everyone was singing along, if they werent playing a whistle, there were the dancers, and of course, they were half drunk some of them, lol. some of the songs i didnt know, so i had to listen for a bit before i could join in but it was grreat, and im still buzzing from it, so i had to tell people!! im so goin next week..well, the week after, coz its not on next week. LOVED IT!!!! its only a small pub, and the whole thing was full of crazy irish people...ok, only a few were actually irish singing as loud as they could...id like to pretend they were all irish tho ooh i had such a great time!!!

Tis great to hear!!! It took me a long time to gain the confidence to play at sessions. But over the years i have learnt by heart many Irish songs and as my skill on bodhran and guitar increased i was able to vary the chord patterns etc. Sessions are the greatest!! A great way to rouse some Irish spirits! I always get a kick out of playing some songs that are over 2000 years old! Have you ever heard of the tune "King of the fairies" Ihrian? Tis over 2000 years old. Also have your heard the song "The Foggy Dew" ? Its a song about the easter Rising of 1916 in which the IRA fought on easter day which lead to the eventual independance of Ireland. It is my favourite Irish tune.

lol it took me awhile to go over and talk to them let alone go get my violin and start playing...but it rocked so much, like you said, great irish spirit lol and it wasnt just our corner of the pub, the whole place was singing and stuff!!! it was fantastic!! and yes, ive heard both, i have a few different versions of each of them on cd. tho, while i was there, they played neither!! i was going to start playing king of the fairies, or something like it, but was too shy, lol i will next time..i havnt played most of my irish stuff in about 5-6months, (i havnt been allowed to, coz i had to do 'exam practise' lol) so when i got home i dug it all out again, and my cds, and i found one id forgotten about, which had some untraditional but fantastic tunes on, so i had to learn them...so i was up all night ive taking quite a liking to the 'old guy singing the old irish song' type thing, i never used to like it, i only ever listened to the instrumental stuff. im addicted to mursheen durkin and the galway races...dont ask me why. but gosh, i love irish music...its so...i dunno!!! its great i never knew king of the fairies was so old!! thats so great tho!! and the foggy dew, i never really listen to it much, but i do know it. i did a whole semester of history and history extension assignments on the easter rising and the IRA bombings and the partition and irelands kind of independance. it fascinated me, so maybe i should listen to the song more

One of the things I played in college on marimba was an old Irish jig. Not sure what song it was. I remembered trying to play the piece & I'd probably mark this as the point where I started getting the real need to look into Celtic. Problem was, I had no internet (it was barely being used) & book stores barely had anything. Barnes & Noble was wee....
So, I really couldn't find much....Anyway, I'd love to jump in on jam sessions. I've done a ton of rock...one jazz....not much more than that. Problem with not being a hand percussionist. Ya can't do very much unless there's a drumset! Although, the Roland V-drums (electronic set) has som hand drum sounds in it....Still no bodhrán.....bummer!

i played marimba for a little bit in primary school! ive only been to two of these sessions so far, the first one was the week before xmas, and then the week after they werent there, the week after that we couldnt make it, so the last one i went to was on wednesday night just gone, i took my friend, whos name is also erin, whos also my age and also plays violin when mic, the lead guy, announced our names we got a few laughs, they were just discovering that they could say, 'hi erin' and refer to us both...twas great. anyway, we're both going again this wednesday, and the week after both our families are going along for dinner as well as to watch. i swear this is the most fantastic experience of my life so far ive only taken my violin along, and im thinking of taking my whistle this week..i would maybe take my drum but theres already enough of them there, and theyre all really good, so lol..and the only thing they dont have is a fiddle, and now they have two!!
