Stave Ogham Branch Ogham Finger Ogham It may also be important to specify the differences between these types of Ogham, the "branch Ogham" for example would have been those found on "wands of Yew" and the like. The Branch Ogham is self exclamitory but Stave Oghams might be a little more difficult. These are the types which would be found on stones, standing stone circles and certainly other stones as well. Now the finger Ogham probably needs very little explaination.

Wasn't the finger ogham a kind of secret communication (hand signals)? Or am I just falling for those ol' romantics again?

Wasn't the finger ogham a kind of secret communication (hand signals)? Or am I just falling for those ol' romantics again? The hand/finger Ogham occording to my understandings was a type sign language only understood by the Druids and Bards. They could speak in this "Language with out words" so that they alone could understand. I would imagine that around the time of Pádraig's coming to Ireland and turmoil and confusion began the skill would have been invaluble.

And, then there is the Dichetal Do Chenaib... could the two be related?

And, then there is the Dichetal Do Chenaib... could the two be related? Dichetal Do Chennaibh is illumination by song. It is the altered state that is achieved through chanting, druming or singing which usually call upon the gods in some way. I think all things in Celtic lore are related and evoled on a similar stream.

I was just thinking about the drumming aspect and how it is possible to move into an altered state of consciousness through drumming.... seemed related to those fingers...

I can see what your thinking, each skill and art taught in the Celtic traditions flows from the last in a great river...Perhaps you can describe your thoughts in a bit more detail?

Okay, I sometimes just use my hand to drum a bit on my bodhrán as I begin to meditate. I was thinking about the finger oghams and how I might use them as I drum with my fingers, utilizing their depths of meaning and the flow of one to the other, to gain enlightenment in my subsequent meditation...
Beth, Duir, Ngetal, Saille, Quert... (thumb=new beginning, forefinger=duration, middle finger=cleansing, ring finger=intuition and pinky=wholeness) for example... Drum the fingers across the surface of my bodhrán over and over, focusing on the fingers, the ogham and the meanings...

This has actually been a very interesting experiment for me. I have ended up 'seeing' these Ogham (the ones I cited above), interacting and building upon one another in my meditation, when I use this drumming technique. They become first like birds with wings, then change to little bricks that fit together in different ways (ever play Tetris?... something like that...).
