The work of a Druid Shaman is primarily preformed within other worlds, realities, dimensions, as well as the self, and while I will be careful about using the word "never" shamanism as far as personal growth goes, seldom takes place within the physical. This fact is taken a step further when we take a moment to examine shamanism in other cultures. Siberia, Native American, as well as yes, the Celts.
Aside from animal guides, ancestral meetings, and inner journeys the one defining quality all these cultural shamans have is that they are the connection between themselves and their people to the other world, which is what makes traditional shamanism a tribal practice by nature though today it is more modernized by western culture to once again meet the needs of a people, and be available to once again fit the needs of the people, and be available to those of us who would answer it's call.
Shamanism as presented on these boards by Wren and myself isn't meant to meet the needs of a tribe or the many, but more-over as a means of personalized growth meant to empower the individual mind.
Shamanic journeys are relatively easy to take depending on one's level of self discipline, ability to visualize, and connection to spirit (If your having trouble in any of these areas, then you need to practice more than anyone, I will later provide easy exercises in each). Normal thought, as well as the "rational" mind need to be temporarily turned off, or suspended for such a journey can even begin to take place. Thoughts for example on whats for supper will keep the mind bound to the physical plain.
As mentioned earlier, the Druid shaman *is* the connection between this world and the three-fold Celtic cosmos. Without this connection which is formed by the unbound mind one will never meet ancestors, animal guides, learn the arts of shape-shifting, or be able to explore the elemental abyss.
Firstly you'd want to choose a quiet, peaceful setting in which to do your work, where you know you will not be disturbed...Don't believe the importance of this?...Ask Wren what its like to be JERKED from another realm of consciousness! Got pets? Cats can be the absolute best, or worst! Animals can feel the power surging around an individual in the throws of a Shamanic journey or trance, some will jump in your lap to soak up that energy, others simply won't care at all, and still others like "Bobby" (my bob cat) will sit on the arm of the chair and take the journey with me, I have found her many times in other realms and worlds and she guides me well.
Shamanism is the truth and innocence of the unbound mind, it is one's connection to the other world, it is allowing one's *self* to drift freely in the ever swirling, ever dancing Boyne, the great spirit river, which weaves it's self across three great plains which make up a cosmos, as well as a discovery of the secrets and journeys it holds.
To all those who will, I say..."Good Journey!"
