So I got into a big argument with a good friend of mine last night. She said she wanted to officially denounce Christianity by burning a Bible, recording it, and posting the video on Youtube. I told her I thought that was an extremely disrespectful thing to do and well.. things started getting bad after that.
My argument was that it was disrespectful, that the beliefs of others should be respected even if you don't agree with them, and that she was going out of her way to do something that was hateful.
Her arguments were that it was her Bible, she had the right to do it, and it's the Christian's fault, not hers that they might get offended by something like that. And that Christians have done nothing to earn her respect and for that reason she didn't need to show them any.
Now she won't even talk to me. Egads.
Am I really that far out of place to think that burning a Bible and posting the video on the internet is a really horrible thing for someone to do?

It shows that religion has nothing to do with moronic behavior. Human beings are human beings. I've often made the argument that Atheists, Wiccans, Pagans, and/or Heathens tend to behave no better than the Christians they like to demonize. I've found lots of militant Wiccans who embrace behaving just like Fundamental Christians and who see no irony in it whatsoever. And you were correct when you pointed it out to her. One would wonder why she even cares what Christians think, or why she would get a thrill or any sort of empowerment out of doing something she knows will agitate them. The simple answer is this has nothing to do with Christianity or any other faith. It has to do with her, and wanting to get attention. If she wanted to burn her bible on her own, as a ritual or an act of self empowerment, that would be something entirely different. She wants to tell people she is doing it, piss them off, and make a spectacle in the process. Her motivations for doing it are hence, very different. It isn't about her faith, it is about jumping up and down and screaing "IN YOUR FACE" to other people.  She is correct. It is her Bible. Of course, she is being a hypocrit in saying that about it is the Christian's fault for being upset if she goes out of her way to upset them, going so far as to put it on the internet and do it in a way she knows will rub them wrong. She wants them to get upset. If it didn't upset them she wouldn't have any fun in doing it. As for her last comment, she clearly believes that two wrongs make a right. And this is bad? Why? It seems to me she is a self-involved idiot. You are better off in the long run, even if it seems painful now. This is her loss, not yours. In fact, when she makes an extreme ass out of herself, you are better served by not being associated. Nope. I think you are sane. I'm not a Christian. Moreover, I wasn't born or raised a Christian. I don't care what they thing, do, or say. Just the same, I think it is utterly moronic and rude to do such a thing. She is doing the virtual version of burning a cross on someone's lawn. |

Wow...Some people's kids eh? I agree with Lala and Finn, if she wants to show how dumb and idiotic she can be its her problem, not yours. It's good that you respect the beliefs of others, it shows that you have security in your own beliefs and people will in turn respect yours for it.

I'm sorry but this girl really makes no sense. I have to agree with everyone else on this as well. Book burning is not a way to go. It was done many times before. Does it really solve anything? No. Just gives a poor example of someone who feels neglected by their former religion. Many fine examples out there of the same. It's a pity. As a former Catholic, I wouldn't dare set fire to Christian Bible. Let's simply say that Karma has a way of answering your call. In her case, she left a beacon for humans to to see as well. I hope she learns enough in her life to be able to put a check mark in the 'Bad' column.

Granted, the girl is an exhibitionist, but I don't find her attitude or beliefs that far removed from most militant Wiccans, Pagans, and/or Heathens I've run across. She is just another example of someone under the Pagan Umbrella for the wrong reasons. She isn't seeking truth, just angry at something and going whichever direction she perceives is the opposite. It is a pity she isn't on on board here. I would love the opportunity to try and knock some sense into her. She can come debate me the merits of her positions, or lack thereof. |

Never seen her before but I wouldn't be surprised if she ends up on a TV show or something....
You know there are plenty of places that (removing the Bible burning part) would like to use that.
